ABSTRACT:

The complexity of high-tech equipment is increasing in response to increasing demands for functionality, customization, resilience, and evolvability. This increasing complexity affects all phases of system development from design, implementation, verification, and maintenance and results in increasing development times and cost. Managing non-functional requirements, such as system performance, is particularly challenging in such complex distributed software-intensive systems, and it is difficult to maintain the overview and pinpoint problems. New performance engineering methods are needed to ensure the application continuously delivers on customer requirements throughout its life time. This presentation introduces a framework for telemetry-based performance engineering based on open-source tools and explains how telemetry data, such as traces and metrics, can be used by model-based methodologies to automatically analyze, optimize, and verify performance in complex distributed systems.

BIO:

Benny Akesson completed his doctoral studies at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands in 2010. Since then, he has been employed as a Researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology, Czech Technical University in Prague, and CISTER/INESC TEC Research Unit in Porto. He is presently a Senior Research Fellow at TNO-ESI, leading applied research projects in collaborations between the public sector and industry. Additionally, since 2019, he is an Endowed Professor at the University of Amsterdam, where he holds the Chair of Design Methodologies for Cyber-physical Systems. His research interests include model-based engineering, real-time systems, and system performance engineering. Prof. Akesson's contributions to academia include co-supervision of 7 PhD degrees. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles in conferences and journals, alongside authoring two books on memory controllers for real-time embedded systems. His research has been recognized with three Best/Outstanding Paper Awards and a CODES+ISSS Test-of-Time Award. A Senior Member of the IEEE, Prof. Akesson has contributed to approximately 40 program committees, also in chairing roles.
