A Game Theoretical Framework to Assess Communication Strategies in C-ITS

Abstract:
Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) are an important area of development for many domains. Road users and traffic managers share information and use it to coordinate their actions in order to improve road safety, traffic efficiency and comfort of driving, allowing the driver to make the right decisions and adapt to the traffic situation. Its effectiveness, however, depends on the user’s decision-making process, which is the main source of uncertainty in any mobility system, and depends on the ability of the infrastructure to communicate appropriately, timely and reliably. The communication problems may be diverse and may be affected by many factors. Using a binary road network as the study scenario, a game based on the n-Person Prisoner’s Dilemma was formalized, in which the traveller information system is one ofthe participants together with N − 1 vehicles. Taking place in a dynamic environment, with en-route path recommendations, the emergence of cooperation and changes in agents’ social and economic behaviour are analysed, as well as the effect of information percolation in both flawless and malfunctioning transmission situations. The results highlighted a close relationship between the emergence of cooperation and network performance, as well as the impact of the communication failure on the loss of cooperation sustainment, which was not recovered after the system was re-established.
